The title of the sitcom is based on the classic song "I Dream of Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair", written by Stephen Foster back in 1854 - the same composer who wrote "Beautiful Dreamer", "My Old Kentucky Home", "Oh! Susanna", "Camptown Races" and "Swanee River". The titular pun plays on the fact that the words "Jeannie" and "genie" are homonyms (with identical pronunciations).
