In the late 1960s, plans were made to introduce the show's first black family and make Jerry Booth the show's first gay character. These plans were dropped for fear of alienating more traditional viewers. The show ultimately did not get its first gay character until 2003, when Todd Grimshaw came out, and did not feature a black family until 2012, when Lloyd Mullaney reunited with old flame Mandy and discovered the existence of their daughter Jenna.
