Aly Michalka was offered the title role by Gary K. Marsh while her sister AJ Michalka was offered the role of Lily Truscott, but they turned it down as Aly had just finished work on Phil of the Future (2004) and feared it would be difficult for audiences to dissociate the characters from the singing duo Aly & AJ who were shifting towards a more mature audience.
