Saphira grows up instantly in the film after first taking flight, whereas in the novel she spends a month with Eragon bonding with him before she grows older. Stefan Fangmeier consciously made the change for pacing reasons, as Durza in the film is already hunting Saphira and Eragon, establishing a sense of looming danger, and he didn't want to compromise the threat by showing Eragon and Saphira spending a month hanging out. This change received backlash from fans and critics for sacrificing any character development for Eragon and Saphira by rushing her maturity.
