In the early stages of filming, the film was supposed to have 60 major characters, but it was reduced to 23. Scrapped characters included a suburban housewife, a soldier, a televangelist, a few college students, several of Professor Donald Kessler's colleagues, a doctor and his nurse fiancé, an actress, a pair of survivalists, and a policeman.
