The character of Conrad Strughold was named for a real Nazi scientist, Hubertus Strughold, who conducted experiments on concentration-camp prisoners during World War II. The real Strughold was one of hundreds of Nazi scientists brought to America by the US government; they settled him in Texas, where he worked for NASA until his retirement in 1968. When he died in 1986 he was hailed as "the Father of Space Medicine." The Aerospace Medical Association gave an award named for him from 1963 until 2012, when the award was discontinued because of rising awareness of Strughold's atrocities.
