Many fans and audiences were disappointed by how this film disregarded several of the plot threads started in Star Wars - Il risveglio della Forza (2015), and how it answered some of its lingering questions. Writer/director Rian Johnson stated in interviews that he had read J.J. Abrams' script for The Force Awakens, but to his knowledge, there was never an overarching story outline for the trilogy that he had to adhere to. Lucasfilm executives, including Kathleen Kennedy, gave Johnson full creative freedom to develop the story as he saw fit, and they were reportedly enthusiastic about some of his more controversial choices.
