A few things in the original Hobbit novel aren't as important in the film, but are referenced: when trying to tiptoe away from Smaug while the dragon is still asleep, Bilbo is holding a golden cup: in the book, he stole this cup during his initial trip into Erebor; Smaug notices the missing cup, and exits the mountain in search of the thief, but cannot find him and returns inside. Golden coins later fall from Smaug's belly as he crosses over the Company; in the book, it is explained that Smaug is aware of his vulnerable underbelly, which contains a weak spot near his heart. He purposely allowed coins and hard gemstones to be embedded between his scales, to make his belly impenetrable.
