Director James Gunn has quietly protested the film's same-day release on HBO Max. While he has praised the service in regards to the Peacemaker series, Gunn was reportedly outraged to learn the film would be available to stream alongside its theatrical release and has refused to mention HBO Max when promoting the film, frequently asserting that it was made for theaters, specifically IMAX.
