Despite the film being labelled as an Eddie Murphy "ego trip" and mediocre critical reviews, this movie did reasonably well at the box office, helped in part by Tony Scott's high tempo directing style and the presence of Brigitte Nielsen, who was then a rising star. However it would be seven years before the next film in the series was released.
