This being Leiji Matsumoto's first venture into anime, he was extremely devoted to his work: he handled all the storyboards for the series (normally one person only storyboards part of an episode); he handled the script for the series; and also had to write for the "Yamato" manga comic. This caused him severe lack of sleep and intense fatigue. It also came at a personal cost: his pet cat Mi-kun died of cancer during production; even though Matsumoto had known she was ill he was far too busy to tend to her.
