The comedy play "The Marriage of Figaro" (1778) by Pierre Beaumarchais was banned in France until 1784, because it ridiculed the nobility and denounced aristocratic privileges as unfair. Marie Antoinette secured private copies of the play for herself, and wanted the ban lifted. With her support, the play had its public debut in 1784. The play is credited with spreading revolutionary sentiment in France, something which the Queen likely failed to understand.
