Peter Jackson, director of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movie trilogies, originally confirmed he would not be involved with the TV series, and happily watch a Tolkien adaptation that he did not make. However, in 2018 he suggested he might be offering advice on the scripts, which he asked Amazon Prime studios to look at but was turned down, reportedly because the Tolkien Estate was against Jackson's involvement with the project. The showrunners still had several private discussions with him about the series, though.
