In reality, Slim Pickens actually dressed like his character, Major Kong. As the film was made in the UK, Pickens (who had never left the USA before) had to acquire a passport and showed up on set in his usual regalia of cowboy hat and boots. The cast and crew assumed he'd already been dressed by the costume department.
