The film's opening sets the tone of the genetic experiments and shows the dissection of creatures like a starfish, sea cucumber, and a lizard. It also shows close-ups of a monkey paw and other primates, one of which seems to get injected with a suspicious fluid. The animals that appear to be getting harmed were special effects creations, such as the fake syringe used on the Capuchin monkey. Professional trainers supplied and attended to the live animals.
