Suzanne Pleshette was a front-runner for the role of Blanche, before Rue McClanahan was cast. Having just finished a seven-year run on The Bob Newhart Show (1972), she turned down the part as she simply didn't want to commit to another weekly series. She also was the first choice for the lead role of Jennifer Hart on Hart to Hart (1979), but turned that part down for similar reasons.
