The character Scruple, Gargamel's apprentice and a secondary antagonist on the series, was created specifically for the series. He never appeared in the original Peyo comics or in any of the Sony feature films of the early 2000's. Scruple later partially became the inspiration for Holly Nemov, a snarky, red-haired necromancer's apprentice in a Canadian occult political novel titled Necromancy Cottage, which had no connection with The Smurfs beyond this. Scruple as a character may have been loosely based on a number of one-time minor side characters, all said to be related to Gargamel in some way, who appear at different points in the Peyo comics, although none of them physically look like Scruple. The character's addition to the show may have also been an attempt to add more development to Gargamel's side of the story, whereas the Smurfs themselves got the new character addition of Sassette, a strong-willed tomboy Smurf who joins them, and who serves as the only other female Smurf besides Smurfette.
