The movie quite purposely contains numerous references to other movies, in addition to events within the Fast and Furious films dating back to Fast & Furious 5 (2011). Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) compares Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to Hercules, which is particularly notable given the fact that Hobbs' role in Fast & Furious 7 (2015) was deliberately minimized because Johnson was set to film Hercules: Il guerriero (2014) (as its title character) during most of Fast & Furious 7 (2015)'s original filming schedule. After filming was postponed following Paul Walker's death, making Johnson available again, the producers retooled that movie's ending to incorporate Hobbs as a major part of the action. Other references include a riff on "Miss Parker" (Ramsey) based on a line from Ci vediamo venerdì (1995), also directed by F. Gary Gray, and Lo squalo (1975), with Hobbs' comment "we're gonna need a bigger truck" while on the run from the submarine. Deckard woken up by his mother in the ambulance also references the Crank films, in which Jason Statham starred.
