Apes in Fongoli, Senegal have recently been observed fashioning spears from tree branches and using them to wound and kill bush babies, also known as galagos, in their nests. This is the first time such use of tools by animals other than humans has been observed. One wonders if Kubrick might have known about this behavior and included this scene as a little joke. On the other hand, "The Bushbabies" was a popular children's novel published in 1965, which features a 13-year-old girl with a pet bush baby.
