In the prequel short film 2036: Nexus Dawn (2017), the character of Wallace is introduced, who meets with a committee in charge of enforcing the ban on Replicants. He is accompanied by an assistant who is revealed to be Wallace's brand new model of Replicant, which is designed to obey without question. As a demonstration, he orders the Replicant to hurt and then kill himself. It is inferred that the shock factor was enough to convince the committee to reconsider, so over the following decade, Wallace creates hundreds of his new super-obedient Nexus 9 Replicants with open-ended lifespans.
