The film was rumored to have been originally written with the intention that Jeff Bridges would play Jack and Ellen DeGeneres would play Annie. DeGeneres was apparently considered because the role of Annie was going to be a more comedic role that contrasted the serious role of Jack. DeGeneres denied being considered for the role in a 2015 Howard Stern interview, however.
