There is a small foreshadowing in Marty reading "Little Nemo" early in the film. "Little Nemo" was originally a comic strip in the early 20th century and then an animated film released in 1989. In the story Nemo releases the Nightmare King from his prison. One of the main premises in this movie is monsters being released from their cells.
