The Key To Time arc came about because Graham Williams wanted to do something different for the series and he decided to do an entire season as one big story which wouldn't be done again until The Trial of a Time Lord. The Key to Time arc story would be about The White Guardian sending The Doctor, K9 and new companion Romana on a quest to search for all 6 segments of a cube called The Key to Time and stop The Key to Time from falling into the hands of The Black Guardian.
