Bob Barker initially had no interest in hosting the program, since he hosted "Truth or Consequences (1950)", another audience participation show, and he didn't want to be typecast as an audience participation game show host only. He wanted to show his versatility and host more of a quiz-based show. B. Donald Grant convinced him to take the job by saying that "Gambit" and "The Joker's Wild" needed traffic cops, and "The Price is Right" needed a ringmaster.
