Director Nicholas Meyer was offered the job relatively late in the project. Paramount Studios executive Karen Moore recommended him due to him being the writer of best-selling novel "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution" (1974) and writer/director of the film L'uomo venuto dall'impossibile (1979). It was hoped he would resolve the scriptwriting problems of the film project, as well as direct it. He was successful.
