Succession actors Kieran Culkin, J. Smith-Cameron, and Jeannie Berlin and Succession casting director Douglas Aibel all previously worked together in Kenneth Lonergan's 2011 film Margaret (2011). Smith-Cameron and Lonergan, who are married, are two of Culkin's closest friends and collaborators. Culkin said that during season 1 of Succession he and Smith-Cameron would jokingly flirt with each other on set but never dreamed that the writers would make it part of the plot.
