The Brontosaurus scene for a long time drew criticism for showing a herbivorous dinosaur chasing and eating the sailors. However, during the attack in the river, the Brontosaurus picks up several men in its teeth, only to toss them aside back into the river. It later plucks a man out of a tree, shakes him like a dog with a toy, then crushes him into the ground. But at no time is it shown or implied that any of the men are eaten. During the 2000s and 2010s, scientific views about herbivorous dinosaurs have also changed. As most modern day large herbivores like hippos, rhinos or wildebeest are far more dangerous and aggressive than many carnivores, it is thought the same would have been true for extinct animals as well. It is also likely that even plant-eaters would have consumed small amounts of meat to gain nutrients. Thus, the Brontosaurus scene is nowadays applauded for being very forward-thinking for the 1930s, especially since at that time scientists falsely thought such animals were slow, lumbering and harmless.
