According to Ashley Liao, two golden retrievers played the Tanners' dog. One was named Cosmo, who appeared in most scenes requiring close-up shots or specific dog tricks. The other, occasionally seen in brief walk-ons in the background, was executive producer Jeff Franklin's pet, Charlie. However, Franklin later clarified that there was only one Cosmo, and that Charlie only appeared as a patient at D.J.'s pet clinic. Fans were saddened to learn that Charlie passed away of old age in March 2017. A dedication was made to Charlie during the closing credits of the Season 3 premiere.
