In his commentary for The Taking of Pelham 123, screenwriter Brian Helgeland recounted the filming of a mortally wounded Creasy floating in the pool. It was shot at the 1968 Olympic Pool in Mexico City. The filming day was very long, with director Tony Scott filming the scene from different angles and using different filming techniques to get the desired effect. Eventually Denzel expressed how tired he was, and Tony asked for one more take. As Denzel was floating underwater, Tony stripped naked and as he called cut dived into the pool next to Denzel as he surfaced, much to Denzel and the crew's amusement.
