Clarice Starling was one of the biggest influences for creating the character of Dana Scully, according to X-Files (1993) creator Chris Carter. There is also a tribute to this movie in the last episode of the ninth season (X-Files: The Truth (2002)), when Scully visits Mulder in the jail and he tells her, "I smelled you coming, Clarice."
