Hideaki Anno had considered making Shinji a female character, similar to his previous series Nadia - Il mistero della pietra azzurra (1990), but character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto talked Anno out of it. He also suggested to model Shinji and Asuka's relationship on Nadia and Jean's from the other series.
