The original title of this show was actually "NBC's Saturday Night", not "Saturday Night Live". Two shows premiered at the same time in 1975, one on ABC, and one on NBC; both meant to be night time variety shows which featured sketch comedy in the vein of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. One featured Howard Cosell, (the ABC show); one featured the Not Ready For Prime Time Players, (the NBC show). The ABC show flopped and was quickly cancelled, and the NBC show was a huge hit. So for season 2 NBC bought the name "Saturday Night Live" and the name was officially changed at that point. Although if you notice they still loudly introduce it as, "Live! From New York! It's Saturday Night!". And that's because that was the original title of the show for the first year.
