At the beginning of the series, Jo wears tomboyish type clothing, when not wearing her Eastland uniform, with a minimal amount of make-up. However, producers did this for two main reasons. One was to help differentiate her from Blair, who constantly dressed in a very feminine high fashion style. Secondly, Nancy McKeon, in her own right, is a great beauty, and producers didn't want her character regarded in that fashion. McKeon's beauty became more evident by the last two seasons, wherein she was allowed to start wearing more feminine and flattering clothing along with more make-up.
