In the original ending, Whiplash is revealed to have survived the explosion, and attacks Tony and Pepper before being killed by Rhodey. The ending was changed to a more ambiguous situation, in case Marvel wanted to bring back Whiplash for future movies. As of June 2021, there are no plans to do so.
