Aside from his signature action-adventure films, although Akshay Kumar had previously played the lead in successful comedies like HERA PHERI and AWARA PAGAL DEEWANA as well as an award winning negative role in AJNABEE(also directed by Abbas-Mastan), this movie made a departure from his usual strong macho male characters and displayed him as a vulnerable individual, both emotionally and mentally.
