The film had three potential endings shot. The first alternate ending had Bob Maconel going on his shooting spree, but getting shot and killed by Coleman (who in this version is a another worker and not Bob's alter ego) before he can shoot Vanessa, who says "I love you" to Bob right before he dies. In the second alternate version, Bob never goes on a shooting spree; Vanessa compliments his hula girl statuette, and he adds an entry to a notebook detailing hundreds of minor interactions they've had. The ending that made the final cut reveals Bob hallucinated every event since he dropped the bullet for his gun, and has him commit suicide, after which he gives a voiceover about his desperation and loneliness as the movie ends.
