The paddle steamer on which Agatha Christie had cruised the Nile in 1937: the P. S. Sudan, was still in existence though derelict, the Thomas Cook fleet of Nile steamers having been deactivated in the 1940's. However either the Sudan was unavailable to the film-makers or else they did not prioritize its use, instead refurbishing another derelict paddle steamer: the Memnon, to serve as the S. S. Karnak of ''Death on the Nile''. The noise generated by the Memnon's paddle wheel mandated the motor apparatus being turned off during filming: onboard footage where the boat is visibly moving was effected by the Memnon being pulled upriver by tugboats. Scenes of the boat apparently sailing up the Nile were in fact shot at Pinewood Studios using a water-tank and a mock-up of the Memnon. The actual P. S. Sudan - refurbished first in 1991 and again in 2000 - would be utilized for the Poirot: Death on the Nile (2004) episode of the Poirot (1989) TV series.
