The film is not the first time that Tom Hanks portrays the manager of a rock star or rock stars. In this film, Hanks portrays "Colonel" Tom Parker. 26 years earlier, Hanks wrote, directed, and starred in Music Graffiti (1996). He portrayed Mr. White, the manager of The Wonders, the band showcased in the former film.
