While talking exclusively to Screen Rant, Jim Carrey said that it was vital for him to "connect with that Robotnik that people were used to seeing in their video game" and that he even pushed for the character to have the "round suit." Higher-ups shot the idea down, and it never reached a concept stage, but Carrey said that "it could happen" and that he thought the look was "really cool." Carrey went on to talk about the internal changes the character takes on as well, especially when he gets hold of the "emerald power," which is an ode to the Master Chaos Emerald of the game, a mystical relic that grants great power to the one who possesses it, with Robotnik becoming "quantum evil" according to Carrey. "He's evil 3.0, and now he can bend time and space."
