One subplot of the novels that was ignored in the film was that Emperor Shaddam had no sons or male heirs. He had five daughters: (by order of birth) Irulan Corrino, Chalice Corrino, Wensicia Corrino, Josifa Corrino, and Rugi Corrino. Whoever married the eldest daughter Irulan would become the next emperor. Part of Shaddam's defeat is Paul Atreides agreeing to marry Irulan, so that he can legally become Emperor after his victory, although he assures his Fremen lover Chani that the marriage is a purely political one.
