Hansel treats his diabetes with shots of insulin. Although this movie takes place in a medieval setting, this is only partially fantastical. Diabetes was a documented disease since at least 1500 BC in Egypt and India. An actual treatment with insulin wasn't developed until the twentieth century. On January 11, 1922 the first patient ever received an insulin injection to treat diabetes.
