Kurt Russell plays Ego in this film, a villain that wants to replace all life across the universe with its own self. Russell also starred in John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) as Capt MacReady who finds himself in a battle to survive against an alien being ("the Thing") that apparently aims to assimilate all sentient beings to itself: a subtle distinction, but fecund similarity between these alien villains haunting two Russell films.
