Julie Christie appeared in Don't Look Now with Donald Sutherland, in which they play a husband and wife grieving the death of their daughter. Sutherland played the more distant of the two, while Christie's character remained close with the surviving son. Redford later directed Sutherland in Ordinary People, in which Sutherland played the more emotionally available parent, and Mary Tyler Moore the distant mother.
