Jonathan Smith's real name is Arthur Thompson. He died forty years before the series is set, and is a probationary angel, i.e. he is working to become a full one, by helping people and working for the Boss, aka God. The idea of dead people becoming angels is not standard doctrine in most mainstream churches, Judaism or Islam, where they are seen as a separate race to people. One major exception to this is Mormonism. Latter-day Saints believe that their prophet Joseph Smith was visited by the angel Moroni who was dead. The idea tends more towards Spiritualism and certain New Age concepts. A close examination of many of Highway to Heaven's themes shows it does not adhere closely to any particular religion.
