In his autobiography, Henry Wilcoxon explains that Cecil B. DeMille was adamant that the extras playing Roman soldiers know how to fight ancient combat. To demonstrate this, DeMille grabbed a spear from an extra and charged at Wilcoxon with it. Wilcoxon fought back with his sword and after a wild two minutes of dueling, Wilcoxon cut the tip off of DeMille's spear. A satisfied DeMille told the extras that if they didn't want to fight like this to leave now. Half of the soldier extras did.
