The story shares many similarities with the Fritzl case, which emerged in Austria in April 2008. Josef Fritzl kept his daughter, Elisabeth, captive in a bunker for 24 years. Repeated rapes produced seven children, three of whom remained in captivity with their mother. The story Ma tells Jack to explain the "world" they're in resembles what Elisabeth told her children. Josef would shut off their lights or refuse to deliver food for days at a time to punish them. Elisabeth was able to escape when one of her children had to be hospitalised with kidney failure. She and the children needed extra care for their sensitivity to light and germs.
