The writers conceived of Frasier Crane as a "Ralph Bellamy" type - specifically Bruce Baldwin, the character Bellamy played in His Girl Friday: A steady, normal guy who would never be a serious challenge to Sam. The writers found Kelsey Grammer's performance so good that they decided to expand on the character after the Season 3 finale.
