Paul Verhoeven based the look and actions of Edgemar on the professor in Alfred Hitchcock's Il sipario strappato (1966). The director wanted to cast the role as someone "naive and strange and a bit weird." He also took some of Alfred Hitchcock's shot compositions and camera placement low to the ground for the scene between Edgemar and Quaid.
