The character Colonel Jake Statz is a take-off on the real brewer Colonel Jake Ruppert. His father was a brewer in New York City and he joined the company in 1887, starting out as a barrel washer and eventually rising to vice president and general manager before taking over the business upon his father's death. He was a colonel in the National Guard and was elected to Congress, serving from 1899 until 1907. But probably his biggest claim to fame was, as owner of the New York Yankees, he bought the contract of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1919. Ruppert died from phlebitis in January 1939, about ten months after this film was released.
