Doug Liman first read Ludlum's novel in high school and then again while filming Swingers (1996). It was at this time he felt it would make a good movie, and, due to the success that came with Swingers, he was asked what film he would like to do next. The director brought up that he wanted to do The Bourne Identity. It took two years to secure the rights to the novel, a year finalizing a script, and two years for production.
